SLPA women emerge champs at Trivandram VB tourney

by Leslie Fernando

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) women's volleyball team with seven national players in their ranks emerged champions at the Trivandram Volleyball League Tournament (Super League) played in Kerala State, India recently.

Incidentally this is the first time a club side won a tournament outside Sri Lanka. The Ports Authority was the only foreign team in the tourney. The other teams were Indian teams.

The matches were played on a league basis with teams from Kerala State participating. Both Sri Lanka Ports Authority 'spikers' and Indian Electricity Board team came on top in the league round matches.

The SLPA women's volleyballers had a better aggregate of points after completing round four matches (final round) and were declared champions of this invitation tournament. The SLPA women were awarded the challenge trophy presented by the Kerala State Sports Council.

Anusha Deepani of SLPA was selected as the most outstanding 'spiker' of the championships and was awarded a special trophy.

Captain Nihal Keppetipola, Harbour Master and President SLPA Sports Club said that it was indeed a creditable achievement by the SLPA women's Volleyball team winning at the Trivandran Volleyball Tournament.

The SLPA volleyball team have proved their superiority in Sri Lanka tournaments winning many championships since 1999.

The team also has won the Rupavahini Cup Championships for five consecutive years.

Captain Keppitipola further added that the SLPA women volleyballers have been winning continuously due to dedication and hard training, plus fine team spirit. Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Mahilal Silva, Working Director, SLPA are thrilled with the performances of the SLPA women's volleyball team.

Susil Ranasinghe, General Secretary of Sri Lanka Ports Authority Sports Club is the Manager of the volleyball team and he has performed his duties well.

The invincible SLPA women's volleyball team was captained by Thakshila Neranjalee Gunasinghe, the other members of the team: Renuka Pushpamali, Omila Hemanthi, Anusha Deepani, Sugandika Nayomi, N.P.
