Park SC and Old Sylvestrians win, women's joint champs Old Pushpadanians and Seethadevi BV

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr

Park Sports Club, Matale and Old Sylvestrians Sports Club together with women's joint champions Old Pushpadanians Sports Club and Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya took away the championship titles at the first-ever Kandy Hockey Carnival organised by the Old Boys Association of St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, which was worked off at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

The Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake was the chief guest at the opening ceremony while Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.

The men's Super League championship finals between Park Sports Club and Sri Lanka Police produced fine hockey with both teams putting up a fine display. In the end, it was a penalty stroke which decided the championship honours with Sri Lanka centre forward Siraj Mohideen converting a penalty for Parks Sports Club to clinch the issue.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Park SC beat Sri Lanka Air Force 1-0 (C. L. Sumanaratne scoring for Park). Police SC beat Navy SC 1-0 (SC Jayalath).

Old Sylvesterians Sports Club put up a stunning display to win the men's inter-club championship title by defeating the strong Sri Lanka Air Force 1-0 in the final which produced exciting hockey.

Every player from the Old Sylvestrians team worked with unison and played with imagination and ingenuity to ground the Airmen.

The scores stood level at the end of the regulation time and it was during the extra-time that centre forward Viswalingam Loganathan slammed the 'decider', off a pass from skipper Senthul Kumar.

In the quarter-finals, Old Thomians SC, Matale beat Police SC 1-0, (R. A. Ranasingha), Old Sylvestrians beat Wennappuwa SC 1-0 (P. Pushpakanth 1), Old Vidyarthians beat CH and FC 1-0 (D. K. Dissanayake 1), Sri Lanka Air Force beat University of Peradeniya 2-0 (S. Jayasinghe 1 and S. Arunakumara 1). Semi-finals - Sri Lanka Air Force beat Old Thomians SC 3-0 (S. Dissanayake 1, S. Ranasinghe 1, M. Seneviratne 1), Old Sylvestrians beat Old Vidyarthians 2-1.

Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya held Old Pushpadanians Sports Club to scoreless draw. Even two periods of 'extra time' could not break the deadlock and both teams were declared joint champions.

Seethadevi 'stickers' could have clinched the issue if their play was more imaginative.

The Old Pushpadanians SC, on the other hand, thought most of them not very much in touch with the game now put up great fight to stop the school girls in their tracks.

In the women's championships semi-finals, Seethadevi BV beat Pushpadana Girls College 1-0 (Chaturika Wijesuriya) and Old Pushpadanians SC beat Seethadevi SC 3-2 after a gruelling battle. (goal scorers Old Pushpadanians SC - Sudharma Herath 1, A. Rajanayake 1, Amila Kapilaratne 1, Seethadevi SC - S. Prematilleke and I. Liyanage).

Old Zahirians Sports Club, Matale beat Police Sports Club 1-0 to become champions of the men's veterans hockey championship.

It was encouraging to see some of the old wizards in the stick game with some of them having flowing boards in action again. T. M. Risvi scored the winning goal for the Old Zahirians towards the dying stages of the game.

In the semi-finals, Old Zahirians SC, Matale beat Prisons SC 1-0, (S. M. Mulaffer 1), Police SC beat Old Sylvestrians SC 2-1 (Police SC - T. M. Samoon 1, S. Siripala 1), Old Sylvestrians SC - S. Muniandy 1).

The awards were presented by J. G. Tilakasiri, Gamini Jayasinghe, Rasiah Maheswaran, Mahinda Munasinghe, G. G. Hewamathese, Dharshana Wijesinghe, K. Jayaratnam, Sunil Edirisinghe and the Principal, St. Sylvester's College T. H. S. Meetiyagoda.
