Sri Lanka to stage four ITF satellite tourneys again by Lal Gunesekera The International Tennis Federation (ITF) who seems to have a lot of faith in the organisational capabilities of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), have once again called upon the local body to conduct the ITF's four Satellite tournaments in October-November in Colombo where the total prize money for each tournament will be US Dollars 5,000. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the SLTA, Lionel Almeida, told the Sunday Observer that the four tournaments will be conducted between October 11 and November 7 and will be staged at the SSC, Queen's Club, SLTA Playing Section and National Tennis Centre (NTC) it also includes a Masters tournament as well, apart from the three Satellite Competitions. Hill Club of Nuwara Eliya, too, was to be one of the venues, but SLTA decided against it. These tournaments are only for men and the two events will be men's singles and men's doubles. There are also two ITF Junior international tournaments scheduled to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath. The first will be from September 6 to 12 and the other from September 13 to 19. The men's Futures Championship of the ITF which is a US Dollar 10,000 event is down for August 30 to September 5, while the women's Futures which is yet another US Dollar 10,000 event will be from August 16 to 22. Meanwhile, the National Championship is to be staged at the NTC from August 9 to 15, with the SLTA making every attempt to attract competitors from the Asian region with prize money totalling Rs. 2 lakhs. The countries that have been approached are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and South Korea. |
