National oarsman Diluk Aluvihare will lead a 16-member Colombo Rowing Club team (ten oarsmen and six oarswomen) to row at the 103rd Madras-Colombo Regatta to be held on June 26 at Adayar River, Chennai, India.

This popular annual event is conducted by the Madras Boat Club. Colombo Rowing Club are the holders of the Deepam Challenge Trophy which they won last year in Colombo.

The oarsmen-Diluk Aluvihare, Asiri Abeyratne, Devaka Seneviratne, Udesh Hettiarachchi, Usman Fatherally, Prajith Perera, Devanka Aluvihare, Dejan de Zoysa, Heshan Henry and Mevan Gunawardena will participate in the 'A' Fours, 'B' Fours, 'A' Pair, 'B' Pair, 'A' Sculls and 'B' Sculls events.

Meanwhile the oarswomen - Minoli Wijesinghe, sisters Minoli and Mithila Goonewardena, Niroshani Seneviratne, Isurika Peiris and Indunil Peiris will be seen in action in the Pairs, Sculls and Fours.

The rowers are presently training under the national coach Lakmal Wickremage - a former Thomian and national oarsman and assisted by another national oarsman John de Niese.

According to a senior official of the Colombo Rowing Club, the tally of the Regatta stands - 58 wins for Madras and 54 wins for Colombo.

Last year the Colombo Rowing Club rowers performed exceptionally well to win the Regatta and they also won the main event - Board Race 'A' Fours with ease.

Lakmal Wickremage will be the coach and John de Niese will be the assistant coach and the co-ordinator of the rowing team. (L.F.)
