Royal and Kingswood in hard-fought 10-all draw by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr. Royal College fought back during 'injury-time' to battle to a great 10 all draw in their Schools Rugby Tournament match against Kingswood College at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday. At half time, Kingswoodians led 10-0. Both teams collected their points through two tries each. The match started on a furious note though the Royalists excelled in the line-outs and the scrums but Kingswoodians hit back through their fiery loose play. They opened scoring mid way in their first half when No. 8 Achala Perera picked up the loose ball and powered his way to score by the corner flag. Shortly afterwards they scored their second try when they won a line-out and No. 8 Achala Perera peeled out and swung a pass to the three-quarters who moved the ball and full back Erande Weerakoddy who formed the over lap touched down far right. This try too went unconverted. Kingswoodians went into the second half with their tails up with a 10-0 lead but the Royalists had a different plan to upset their chances of posting their maiden win over the Colombo school. Royal College refreshed after the short break looked a completely different team. Kingswoodians had the misfortune of losing their skipper and play maker Fazil Marija and his absence was badly felt by them. Royal started repairing the damage when D. Rajapakse found the gap and scored far left to reduce the lead to 5-10. The game at this stage rose to great height with Royal on the offensive and the Kingswoodians defending their lead grimly. The game now drifted into the injury time and a penalty was awarded to Royal and they very wisely decided to take the short tap and worked their threes for centre Rajith Jayasundara to score mid left but they could not add the extra points. Dilroy Fernando refereed. Wesley beat S. Thomas 7/3 by Ranjan Anandappa Wesley pulled off a hard-fought 7 points (a goal) to 3 (a penalty) win over S.Thomas' in their 'Milo' Schools Rugger Match played at Longden Place yesterday. S.Thomas' led 3-0 at the 'breather'. Both teams made many mistakes, particularly the Thomians who dropped the ball at vital stages or were penalised. The forwards of both sides played well with number 'eight' Namal Rajapakse playing tirelessly for he Thomians in attack and defence. The hard work done by the forwards of either side were simply squandered by the back division as they lacked cohesion. For the Thomians, fly-half Nalaka Muthuhewage put over a penalty in the first half. In the second half, too, the Thomians faulted and this enabled the Wesleyites to take full advantage. Full back Anura Priyantha, attempting a drop-kick which fell close to the touch line and as a Thomian defender trying to retrieve the ball fumbled and Wesley's winger Naushi Farveez touched down under the post. Rukshan Omar made the conversion. Referee: Aruna Jayasekera Trinity trounce Maliyadeva 80/5 by Kandy Sports Correspondent Trinity College displayed pleasing form when they ran amok to trounce Maliyadewa College Kurunegala by the massive margin of 80 points (5 goals, 9 tries) to 5 (1 try) in their schools Division one rugby tournament match played at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekele. At half time Trinity led 20-5. The Trinitians after a subdued first half cut loose in the second to slice through the defence put up by the Devans which in the closing stages was tottering unable to withstand the severe onslaught of the lions. Trinitians went into this game without six of their regulars including skipper and stand off Mohammed Ainaff but the replacements appeared to be equally good or even better as they displayed fine co-ordination and their run and pass play was pleasing to watch. Trinity scored tries through centre Hasantha Mendis (3 tries), lock forward Roshan Munaweera (3 tries), centre H. Jayasooriya (2 tries), flanker B. K. Jayakoddy (1 try), winger I. Jayasena (1 try) prop. B. N. Fernando (3 tries). Winger I. Jayasena goalled five of the tries despite the heavy blowing across the grounds. For the Devans prop S. Maliyagoda scored an unconverted try. A. Rankothge refereed. Trinity won the under 15 game 25 nil and also the under 13 match 10-7. |
