CGTTI opens training centre for technicians

by Hiran H.Senewiratne

The Ceylon-German Technical Training Institute (CGTTI) will open its latest training centre on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Technology to train advanced technicians for the industrial automation sector.

The total investment for this advanced training centre was approximately Rs 40 million. The German Technical Corporation (GTZ) has funded Rs 30 million with the balance Rs 10 million from the government, CGTTI Director/Principal Gamini S.Manchanayake said.

He said that a German expert on the CNC technology was in Sri Lanka to train six local trainers and to prepare modules for the training programs for the institute. The institute is expected to train approximately 40 students for a year, he said.

Manchanayake said that this modern centre will tremendously benefit not only local industrialists but also foreign investors in the country . German CNC expert Gottlob Hann said that inconsistent power supply coupled with frequency fluctuation of power have become a major problems for the smooth functioning of these machines. The non existence of latest tool and technology for the country's industrial sector has also caused major drawbacks to its development, Hann said.

Hann who was in Sri Lanka to conduct workshop on CNC technology to instructors of the training centre, said that this technology can only be seen in developed countries and the use of the state- of- the- art technology of this nature will enable Sri Lanka to be globally competitive.

CGTTI has a partnership with the Gewerbliche Schule Metzingem (GSM) of Germany since 1985. This partnership has been sponsored with more than 140,000 DM by the state of Baden-Wuerremberg.

This institute is affiliated to the Sri Lanka Central Transport Board which is an autonomous body incorporated under an Act of Parliament. It was established with a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany.
