Nankang tyres get set for competition By Elmo Leonard Local dealers of Nankang tyres made in Taiwan earned Rs 7.5 million as profits last year, it was revealed at the annual dealer conference held recently. With Nankang increasing its range of tyres to the Sri Lankan marketplace, higher profits are expected this year. Kandy Tyre House (KTH) based in Kandy is the local distributor for Nankang tyres. Seven months ago there were 95 Nankang dealers islandwide, while today the dealership stands at 106. "You must make profits while fulfilling the needs of the customer," KTH marketing director Sampath Gunathilake said. Nankang launched its Sports NSII series in Sri Lanka, with claims that these tyres provide additional features including added safety. Present on the occasion was the Nankang Tyre and Rubber Corporation's representative, Eric Shih. Shih said that his company was the largest Taiwanese manufacturer of passenger tyres and that their production had doubled during the past few years. Nankang tyres was also the bestseller in Asia. The tyres sell throughout the world, well in Europe and even in Iceland. Nankang tyres began production in 1940, with the manufacture of bicycle tyres. Nankang also has a manufacturing unit in Mainland China. The secret of the Nankang's success is the attention paid to innovation and adherence to the highest quality standards, Shih said. In order to encourage new breakthroughs in product development, Nankang frequently sends their technicians to foreign countries to study new manufacturing techniques, to cultivate research and to develop skills.Nankang's ability in research and development is the reason why their techniques are always superior and leading, Shih claimed. In addition, Nankang develops new products and are continuously updating their equipment to raise product quality, it was made out at the dealer conference. KTH Chairman, M.A.Gunathilake said that in 1976, his business began in a small way in Kandy. Today, his company has grown into the MAG group and provides services to the automobile business in a variety of ways. MAG's Managing Director, Sampath Gunathilake said that competition for tyres in Sri Lanka was growing more intense with each year. The top ten KTH dealers received air tickets to Taiwan and other destinations. |
