Record 21,268 boys and girls for National Schools' Games

The XI National School Games 2004 conducted by Education Department Sports Division will be worked off in three stages at 36 venues in the Colombo District. Twenty three disciplines are included in the games and a record number of 21,268 schoolboys and schoolgirls will participate.

The first stage of the games started yesterday at 13 venues and will be continued today and tomorrow.

The events and the venues are Netball at Sirimavo Bandaranaike MV, Basketball (boys and girls) at Ananda College, Nalanda College, Royal and St. Pauls BV. Elle at Navaloka Playground Welisara, Basilica Playground, Ragama (boys tournament), De Mazenod College Kandana and St. Sebastian's Playground Kandana (girls).

Chess at Gothami BV, Physical training (boys and girls) at St. Anthony's College Wattala, Carrom (boys and girls) at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka headquarters, Colombo 7. Swimming at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming pool, Table Tennis at S. Thomas' College indoor Stadium, Mt. Lavinia Badminton at St. Thomas' College indoor Stadium, Judo at Judo Federation Headquarters near Sugathadasa Stadium. A total number of 8,208 participants will be seen in action.

The second stage will be on September 11,12 and 13 at 18 venues.

There will be 7,060 participants in 11 disciplines-Volleyball at Rajasinghe MMV Hanwella, Football at City League grounds, Reid Avenue grounds and Henry Pedris Stadium, Hockey at University of Colombo grounds, Royal College and Sirimavo Bandaranaike MV, Tennis at SL Tennis Association Headquarters, Cricket at Wadduwa MMV, Wadduwa Municipal Council grounds, Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya, Panadura and St. John's College Panadura, Karate at Vihara Maha Devi BV Kiribathgoda, Wrestling at Veyangoda MMV, Gymnastics at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, the Bodybuilding center at Sri Subuthi Vidyalaya Battaramulla, Kabaddi at NYSC Maharagama and Cycling around Vihara Maha Devi Park.

The third and final stage which includes Athletic Championships will be held from October 1 to 3 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The usual athletic events in the age categories under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19 both boys and girls will be held.

The champions in Netball, Basketball, Elle, Chess, Boxing, Physical Training, Carrom, Swimming, Table Tennis, Badminton, Judo, Volleyball, Footfall, Hockey, Tennis, Cricket, Karate, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Bodybuilding Contest, Kabaddi, Cycling and Athletics will be presented challenge trophies. Meanwhile the outstanding player in the respective disciplines will also be picked and special prizes will be awarded.
