Kingswood beat Wesley 31-11 to take Milo President's Trophy by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr. Kingswood College, Kandy when they became champions of the Milo President's Trophy Schools' Knock-out Championship when they beat Wesley College, Colombo by 31 points (2 goals, 1 try, 3 penalties, 1 drop goal) to 11 (1 goal, 2 penalties) in the finals played at Nittawela yesterday. At half Kingswood led 10-6. It was in the second half that the Kingswoodians cut loose to score as many as 21 points while giving away 7. Wesley opened scoring through a penalty fired by scrum half and skipper Rukshan Omar, but Kingswood equalised soon after in similar fashion through the boots of full back Erande Weerakoddy. But Kingswood took over the lead in the 11th minute when that nippy scrum half squeezed his way to score mid left and Erande Weerakoddy added the extra points. Scrum half Rukshan Omar put over another penalty in the 23rd minute for Wesley to reduce the lead to 6-10 at the breather. On resumption, a late tackle by a Wesley player saw full back Erande Weerakoddy put over a 50 metre penalty. He followed this up with another 35 metre penalty from a difficult angle for Kingswood to lead 16-6. In the 19th minute came another show piece by Weerakoddy who excuted a peach of a drop goal from 35 mitres out to fluster the Wesleyites. In the 24th minute Wesley hit back when Omar, taking the short tap, sent a pass to No 8 Tyrone Harrison who rounded his way to scored mid left. Omar added the extra points. Wesley 13 - 19. At this stage one expected a close tussle as it looked anybody's game but a severe on slaught by the Kingswoodians saw them home with a comfortable win. In the 26th minute, a maul inside Wesley territory saw Kingswood's scrum slip a pass to Fazil Manje who in turn sent lock forward Gemunu Kirinde over the line. Erande Weerakoddy added the extra points. Kingswood 26 - 13. Almost on the stroke of the whistle centre Manoj Tillina flitzed his way to score for left which went unconverted. If there was an award for man of the match then it should go to Kingswood's full back Weerakoddy for his fine play. His booming kicks to touch relieved pressure and he often joined the line to give more trust to the three quarters. He also contributed 16 points through his books to cap a fine performance.
