USA's kwon pockets ITF futures title and US $1300 by Lal Gunesekera Chris Kwon of the USA won the singles title and with it US $ 1300 at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Men's Future's Championships conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) at Greenpath yesterday. The asian born 19-year-old US player, who was sixth seeded, did exceptionally well to beat the fourth seeded Czechoslovakian, Adam Vojmelka, in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, in a 130 minute final. The Czech collected US $ 900. Chinese Taipei's Hsin-han Lee and Tai-Wei Liu won the doubles title beating compatriots Huai-En Chang and Wang-Chang Hsich also in straight sets (6-1, 6-3). Sri Lanka's six- an challenge for the singles title ended in the second-round with 16-year-old Frankly Emmanual losing in straight sets 4-7, 1-6 to top seeded Indian Vinod Sridhar, who is ranked 591 in the ITF world rankings. Earlier, the five other Lankans Rohan de Silva, Renouk Wijemanne, Harshana Godamanne, Amrith Rupasinghe and N. S. Nishendran were eliminated in the first-round. Even Sri Lanka's doubles combinations were beaten in the quarter-finals earlier in the week. They were Rajiv Rajapakse and Renouk Wijemanne and the experienced pair of Rohan de Silva and Jayendra Wijesekera. |
