Remove VAT : SFEA

The Sea Food Exporters Association of Sri Lanka (SFEA) are lobbying for the removal of 15 percent VAT on raw or unprocessed fish, which became effective with the current budget.

SFEA comprising 20 members says that it is the formal sector which pays this tax, which in turn is passed on to the consumer. The informal sector does not pay this tax. The SFEA spokesman questioned whether VAT is collected at St John's wholesale fish market, in Colombo?

Exporters of fish could obtain a rebate for the VAT they pay, but it takes months to recover that money from the Inland Revenue Department. They have appealed to the authorities to do away with the VAT on raw fish so that the growing industry would benefit, unhindered.
