Happenings Compiled by mahes perera Gypsies in LA Sri Lanka's charismatic entertainer Sunil Perera and his popular band the Gypsies performed at a capacity-packed concert yesterday (October 30) at Los Angeles, organised by the Sri Lanka Association. The guest stars at the concert were Desmond, Ginger, Annesley and Ronnie.
This is the fifth time that the Gypsies have jetted across to perform at LA and the band according to Sunil will be performing another concert on Saturday November 6 at New York and Annesley will be one of the guest singers. From then on the band will be working a crowded schedule ' cos next Sunday November 7 it's going to be a dinner dance at Minnesota, with Annesley Malawana. From there, the Gypsies will move across, first to the glitzy world of Los Vegas, then to San Francisco, Washington and back to LA for a dinner dance at each place. The band members are looking forward to the tour, to renew their friendship with their fans in the States. On their return trip to Sri Lanka the band will stop at Bangladesh, Bangkok and quite possibly Malaysia to be the featured band at Sri Lankan dinner dances at all three places. Before they left for the States, the Gypsies have had their fair share of dances and concerts here in Sri Lanka and are looking forward to their dates during the festive season. MAF sing - along at mount 'Down memory Lane' - Sri Lanka's prime sing-along festival of golden oldies, performed by the Moratuwa Arts Forum (MAF) will come on the boards on November 19, at Mount Lavinia Hotel, Empire Ballroom from 7.00 p.m. onwards.
This year's event is being jointly organised with The Management Club (TMC) and supported by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Sri Lanka branch, to raise funds towards a national programme titled enable the disabled and make Sri Lanka a disable friendly nation. Mount Lavinia Hotel as the host hotel for the project. 'Down Memory Lane - 2004' will comprise a wide repertoire of old English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh songs, American plantation and Dixieland favourites, cowboy hits, Negro spirituals, wartime ever greens and calypsos. A classy songbook comprising 100 old favourites will be given free to each participant at the gate. Tickets will be available at The Management Club secretariat located at Mount Lavinia Hotel and at, 'Elrinda', 120/3, De Soysa Road, Moratuwa. The MAF vintage orchestra providing the 'old world charm' musical backing for the sing-along sessions will comprise Randolph De Silva, Ramani Soysa and Pimal Fernando (performing on the piano), Nisanka Wimalasuriya (pedal steel guitar, violin, banjo and harmonica) supported by a galaxy of other musicians and singers of the Forum. |
