AD & Friends in Concert : An overwhelming success by Mahes Perera
Organised by the up and coming band AD, 'Friends in Concert' saw not only enthusiastic band performances but also solo performances by new faces which augurs well for the future. Despite a delayed start in the proceedings the Golden Clef Award winners Flame kicked off the show to a good start singing folk favourites and songs from the world of the Bee Gees and Bryan Adams. The acapella group of young past Peterites calling themselves Ad Lib is now fast becoming a popular vocal group in a scenario filled with hip hop. Their renditions of 'Deep River Woman', 'Drift Away' and 'Follow Me' were good, but we do hope at their next outing we will be able to savour some newer selections. AD was able to get the audience off their seats to sway, clap and sing along with them through hits like 'Knocking on Heaven's Door', 'My Girl' and 'Big Yellow Taxi'. The group surprised the audience with an original 'You've been warned' which saw Prageeth Jerom in fine style vocalising the song along with Gajan Mahasen. The Song was written by new talented Irushi Jayatilleke. Other soloists who gave outstanding performances were Shean Dharmaratne of Revelations who sang an anesting 'Stand By Me' and 'Summer of 69' followed by Kavita Gunasekera who displayed her versatility singing, the contemporary hits 'Angel' and Rod Stewarts' revived hit 'The First Cut is the Deepest'. Joining the band of solo performers was Devashrie de Silva who sang a smooth 'Beautiful' and 'Still the One' and this segment of solo singers conducted with Robin Birendra's performance of a cover of Ronan Keatings 'When You Say Nothing At All'. Now and then, the glitches in the sound system was annoying, but all in all the evening provided an opportunity for music lovers to listen to and enjoy seasoned performances and also get an introduction to the up and coming artists who will turn out to be tomorrow's stars. The finale live performance was by AD as they brought the house down with the Gajaga Vannama and a vibrant acoustic guitar solo by Shehan Perera. The show was compered by Shehan Gunawardena and the El Latino dancers entertained the audience with their exciting choreography of the jive and the salsa. |
