Forces, LTTE on even keel by Ranga Jayasuriya The Security Forces and the LTTE in the East yesterday agreed to step up co-operation at local levels at a meeting held in Batticaloa. Commanding officer of the 23 division Brigadier Vajira Wijegunawardene and Batticaloa Brigade Commander Laksiri Amaratunga met LTTE Eastern political leader Kaushalyan and the Ampara political chief Kuliyapan to discuss the local security situation at a meeting chaired by acting SLMM chief Hagrup Haukland. SLMM spokesman Oskar Solnes said the two parties agreed to increase cooperate at local levels in order to solve possible disputes. "Parties agreed to solve problems at the district levels rather than directing them to upper levels. This would prevent minor issues escalating into big ones," he said. Solnes said the two parties pledged to honour the freedom of movement granted to the ceasefire monitors under the truce agreement. "Sometimes, parties were little reluctant to grant the SLMM access to the places for our inquiries," he said. He also said the two parties agreed to hold regular meetings with each other. The next meeting is scheduled for November 20. |
