Jayasuriya blitz keeps Lanka hopes alive Chris Dhambarage reporting from Pakistan KARACHI, Pakistan. Saturday, Sanath Jayasuriya hammered an unbeaten 96 as Sri Lanka made a promising start in their attempt to save the Paktel GSM Cup second test match against Pakistan putting up an improved batting display in their second innings on day three at the National Stadium here on Saturday. Sri Lanka finished on 134 for 1 still needing a further 136 runs to avoid an innings defeat and make Pakistan bat for the second time. Jayasuriya look set to complete his 14th century in his illustrious career as he also became the highest all time run getter for his country overcoming Aravinda de Silva's previous record of 6361 runs made in 93 test matches. Jayasuriya playing in a record 94th Test match launched a calculated attack on the Pakistani attack stroking 14 fours and one six during his 115 minute stay at the crease so far facing 104 deliveries. The Lankans trailing by a massive 270 runs got off to a spectacular start with Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu smashing the Pakistani opening bowlers to all parts of the ground. Left-hander Jayasuriya in particular batted similar to a one day international racing to his half century in just 49 deliveries. He pulled Naved ul Hasan's very first ball of the innings to the mid wicket boundary effortlessly and also swept Danesh Kaneria for a six over the mid wicket fence. Skipper Marvan Atapattu then glided Riyaz Afridi to the third man boundary as Sri Lanka posted their first fifty runs in only 5.2 overs. Pakistan were now under pressure and were forced to replace both opening bowlers Naved ul Hasan and Riyaz Afridi who were making their test debut. But the runs kept on flowing for Sri Lanka in the manner of singles and two's before leg spinner Danesh Kaneria had Atapattu caught at silly mid on in the 22nd over. The Sri Lankan captain batted fluently until then stroking three fours and facing 44 balls during his 89 minute stay at the crease. Earlier skipper Inzamam ul Haq completed his fifth century against Sri Lanka as Pakistan built up a massive first innings lead of runs. The strongly built right hander played a true captains knock of 117 with ten fours and one six while occupying the crease for more than five hours facing 244 deliveries. Inzamam made certain that Pakistan would extend their overall lead pass the two hundred run mark while putting on 74 runs for the fifth wicket in 98 minutes together with Yousuf Yohana. Youhana made his intentions quite clear hoisting two sixes and stroking five fours from 65 deliveries before he tried to square cut Dilhara Fernando from too close to the body and was held by Sangakkara behind the stumps. But Inzamam ul Haq kept the score moving and reached the three figure mark shortly before lunch while pushing a single to square leg from the bowling of Dilhara Fernando. The Pakistani captain of course was let down by Mahela Jayawardena at first slip when he was on 110 off Dilhara Fernando. This was also Inzamam's third highest score against Sri Lanka behind his unbeaten double century at Dhaka in 1998/99 and the 138 which he compiled at this same venue during the 1999/2000 series. He was eventually dismissed in the first over after lunch with Mahela Jayawardena making no mistake this time at first slip off Chaminda Vaas. However Shoaib Malik further frustrated the Lankans with an aggressive 44 runs which included five hits to the ropes. Together with Abdul Razzaq they put on a useful 50 runs for the seventh wicket. Even then Razzaq was lucky to survive two chances one caught behind off Chaminda Vaas and another bat pad catch from the bowling of Rangana Herath. On both occasions the Pakistan umpire Asad Rauf who was standing in place of Billy Bowden ruled the batsman not out. New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden was reported to have returned back to his hotel with a stomach upset and did not take the field after the lunch interval. Asad Rauf was appointed as the TV umpire for this test and has not officiated in test matches earlier although he had stood in one day internationals. Pakistan were eventually bowled out for 478 the fifth highest score against Sri Lanka behind their 600 for 8 declared at the Galle International Stadium in 2000, 594 at Dhaka in 1998/99, 555 for 3 at Faisalabad in 1985/86 and 459 for 9 at Peshawar in 1995/96.
