S.Thomas' win overall title for 17th time by Leslie Fernando S. Thomas College oarsmen rowed with great endurance, strength and balance to win the overall title with 24 points to Royal's 16 at the 32nd annual Royal-Thomian Regatta held on the Beira waters yesterday. Thomians carried away the T. Noel Fernando Challenge Trophy for the 17th time. Thomian crew rowed gracefully to win the Junior Scull (Ajith Goonewardena Trophy) Junior Pairs (Chula Samarasingha Trophy) Senior Scull (Senior Scull Trophy) and the Senior Four (Boat Race Trophy), while the Royalists won the Senior Pair (Freddie Raux Trophy), Junior Four (Eraj Wijesinghe Trophy) and Junior 'B' Fours - no points (Major General Percy Fernando Memorial Trophy). The champions, Thomians, led with 12 points winning the junior scull, junior pair and senior scull, while Royal had a win in the senior pair (8 points). Prior to the final event Senior Fours - the Boat Race, the scores stood Royal 16 points and Thomians 12 points. The decider for the overall title was the most important event - the Boat Race. Thomian crew of Dejan de Zoysa, Shannon de Silva, Dineshka Aluwihare, Isuru Perera and Dathika Wickramanayake rowed with team work of high quality and perfect coordination to win the final event with a time of 3.21 secs. Thomians beat the Royal crew comprising Shehan Wanigasekera, Gishan Karunanayake, Aquil Sulaiman, Mahomed Fatharally and Dinouk Perera who timed 3.34 secs. The Boat Race tally increased to 19 for the Thomians and Royal 17. Last year the overall was shared by Royal and Thomians with 20 points each. |
