New product a boon to rubber industry

by Hiran H.Senewiratne

L and P Agencies has launched a device to mix bleaching agents especially for crepe and sole crepe rubber for the first time in Sri Lanka.

The device can mix chemicals used to manufacture rubber, a Partner Lincoln Fernando said.

He said that Sri Lanka is the largest crepe rubber manufacturer in the world and the industry has bounced back with the increase in rubber prices in the world market.

Fernando said the product developed by him could mix bleaching agents better than the conventional manual methods. It has the capability to absorb acid particles and substance that are harmful to rubber. This also neutralises the effect of acid by removing proteins, he said.

L and P Agencies plans to popularise this product in the industry and later to the Indian market.

The country's largest rubber buyer Ahna Trading Ltd is the main buyer of bleaching mixers.

The unique feature is that it has an inbuilt heating system and could mix bleach in a better manner, Fernando said.

The company has also introduced a rubber bleaching agent to Sri Lanka to treat rubber when it is in latex foam. This agent will remove the yellow fraction on rubber to obtain a better colour, he said. The new bleaching agent, a non toxic detergent imported from Malaysia known as 'SS25' for the purpose of bleaching the natural rubber removes the yellow particles in it, a partner of L and P Agencies, Parakrama Jayathilake said.

The detergent is 100 per cent non toxic, environment friendly and will not cause any health hazards to factory workers such as headaches and other related sicknesses, he said.

This product is 19 cents cheaper per kilogram when compared to other chemicals in the industry.

The bleaching agent has undergone rigorous tests in four independent laboratories and has been approved by the Rubber Research Institute in Sri Lanka.
