Jaguar auction to fund housing project by Chanuka Mannapperuma People from all walks of life will assist the tsunami affected people in their own way according to their means. Deepthi Perera, Chief Executive Officer ASPIC Group of Companies is one such individual who has decided to auction his personal luxury Jaguar car to fund a housing project for tsunami affected people at Kirinda. "I have decided to auction my personal luxury Jaguar car to provide funds for the tsunami affected people", Perera said. The auction will be held on April 2 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. The car is worth more than Rs. 15 million. Perera is hoping to collect between Rs. 15 to Rs. 20 million by auctioning the car. Explaining the housing project, he said that his company was planning to build 34 houses at Nidangalawella, Kirinda. Perera and his staff have been providing these victims in Kirinda, their day to day needs and taken good care of them ever since the calamity occurred. Nidangalawella, is on the edge of the coastal belt and difficult to reach. Nobody likes to go there and we decided to select this village for reconstruction, he said. At present, there are over 105 people (34 families) living in the Nidangalawella area. Money collected from the car auction will fund the housing project. With the surplus the company hopes to build an orphanage in Kalutara. There are farmers as well as fishermen in Nidangalawella. For fishermen
we hope to donate 12 fishing boats and for farmers we look forward to
providing some agriculture equipment, he said. |
