Fair improvement in fish sales and production

by L. S. A. Wedaarachchi

The Fisheries Corporation will implement the fisheries market stabilisation program to increase sales to keep pace with the increased fish production.

Chairman of the Fisheries Corporation N. B. Nevil said the Corporation expects Rs 100 million from the treasury to implement the program as fish sales have dropped drastically after the tsunami.

"Fair price for fish to the fishermen as well as to the customer" will be the theme of the campaign, he said.

The first phase of the program will be implemented in Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Badulla, Bandarawela and the Nuwara Eliya areas where fish consumption had not returned to the pre-tsunami level.

"Although fish production dropped from 1,100 tonnes to 200 tonnes per day last month, there are indications that the situation is improving.

A fair number of fishermen have resumed operations.

The fish market will also be developed to meet the increased production," he said. The fisheries sector was one of the worst affected sectors by the tsunami devastation.

Fishing and fish sales dropped to almost zero following the disaster. According to information the tsunami destroyed 80% of the fishing boats, 10 fisheries harbours out of 12 in the island and 12,000 fishermen.

Due to the measures taken by the Fisheries Ministry and other organisations under the Fisheries Ministry fish production and fish sales have shown a fair improvement specially in the coastal towns during the last few weeks.
