Musicians for the people - The One Trust :

Five days more

Some of the musicians who will be performing at the concert.

In just five days the much awaited blockbuster concerts 'Musicians for the People - The One Trust' will become a reality at the Race Course grounds. The concert will be held on two days, April 1 and 2.

For the first time in musical history, with the participation of nearly all of the professional musicians of Sri Lanka, in the Western, Sinhala and Tamil arenas will be on a complimentary basis for the worthy cause of raising funds to provide educational facilities for tsunami affected schools in the Ampara, Mullaitivu and Hambantota districts.

On April 1 more than thirty solo singers and bands plus performing backing bands from the Western music scene will be in action in a not to be-missed concert. All leading names in the business will be on stage including Desmond de Silva who will be singing on both days, especially flown down by SriLankan Airlines.

Noeline, Dalreen, Damian, Corinne, Maxi Sohan, Antoinette, Mignonne, Mariazelle, Ashanthi, Warren and Rozette, Bathiya and Santhush, Charles Mark, Ezra, Sound Journey, Phase 3, Flame, Summerset, C & C, Cosmic Rays, Revelation - the list is long will be there. Of course' the Gypsies, Wild Fire, X'Periments, Misty, X'IT, Ultimate, Boomerang, Dream Team, they will be there too, giving of their best for such a worthy cause.

From the Oriental scene, the concert on Saturday, April 2 will see for the first time ever, something like 179 artistes on stage - the present stars and singers and musicians of yesteryear.

They include to name a few, W. D. Amaradeva, Nanda Malini, Indrani Perera, Vernon Perera, Anil Bharati, Lankika Perera, Dalreen Suby, Ronnie Leitch, Felix Anton, Rajiv Sebastian, Nelu Adhikari, Lilanthi Karunanayake, Bathiya & Santush, Sunil and Piyal Perera, Shyami Fonseka, Luke Henricus, Priya Peiris, Noel Ranasinghe, Latha and Amith Walpola, Niranjala Sarojini, M. Sivakumar, Prashanthi, Rani Joseph and Nilukshi Jeya Weerasingham.

The two concerts will be televised by Rupavahini Corporation and out of the DVD/VCD of the concert they expect to earn nearly one million for the fund.

The main sponsor is Cargills, and radio publicity is being handled by Sun FM, Gold FM, Sooriyan FM, Hiru FM and Sha FM. Tickets are available at all Cargills outlets, Suntel, Odel, Torana and Clancy's.

It is a fabulous weekend musical extravaganza which commences at 7 p.m. each day in a carnival atmosphere and you will not, in a long time, get another opportunity to enjoy such a galaxy of musical stars centre stage.

MAF release new CD

Last Sunday the Moratuwa ARTs Forum launched their latest CD Punsanda Paaya to coincide with their eleventh AGM.

The occasion was held at the Sripali Hall, Moratuwa and the CD which contains all originals was released to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Moratuwa Arts Forum. The songs were composed by Sarath Goonewardena, Thilak de Mel, Nihal Fernando, Rolinson Ferdinando, Lucky Deva, Jagath Devapriya, and the music arrangements handled by the composers.

The title track and Siri Bara Moratugama composed by Priya Peris and C. L. Fonseka, sung by forty four singers is included in the CD. Some of the other tracks are Siri Dalada sung by Saman de Silva and Rita Bertus, Christopher Paul's Mother, and Rolinson Ferdinando's Kurulujoduwa.


Worthy music for a worthy cause

The Aqua Heritage Trust's first ever presentation of a concert by international musicians turned out to be a smashing success with the Barefoot Gallery and Cafe packed to capacity. Discerning music lovers in town were at the Gallery on Friday, March 4 to hear and enjoy Glen Terry and Friends in a jazz and blues programme to raise funds for the Sanasuma Village Re-awakening Project to help tsunami - ravaged villages of the southern and eastern coast.

The evening started off with a superb jazz set by the Grant Chamberlain Quartet who was later joined by the Sri Lankan percussionist Nesan Thiagarajan. A blues set followed by Glen Terry with Ramani Krishna on the seven-string electric bass, Shiraaz Nooramith on acoustic drums and saxophonist Andy Thompson who has played with the likes of Dire Straits.

The second half saw Harsha Makalande and Khrome performing a jazz-fused oriental set featuring Rukshan Perera on guitar and Nesan Thiagarajan on Sri Lankan percussion. World-renowned Sri Lankan Yolande Bavan made a surprise appearance scatting out her vocals at centre stage. Singer Geoffrey Fernando and the band Ultimate contributed their music to the evening.

However it was left to the fabulous singer Jerome Speldewinde to bring the show to a rocking close joined by Glen, Ramani, Andy, Shiraaz and Grant, which made Glen remark "this was the most fun we've had in ages.

A second successful concert was held at the Light House Hotel in Galle too land on Saturday, March 12 the funds were in aid of the tsunami victims of the south. The funds from Friday's concert will replace all seven lagoon catamarans and fishing nets lost in the Kunu-Kola harbour in the Panama Patuwa region.


Japanese cultural exhibition

The Lanka-Japan Friendship Society in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan has organised an Exhibition of Japanese Arts and Crafts to be held at the National Art Gallery, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7 from April 2 to 4.

The Exhibition will feature Bonsai (Trees on Platters), Ikebana (Floral Art Forms), Origami (Art of Paper Folding), Suiseki (Natural Rock and Mineral formations), Tsuboniwa (Japanese Courtyard Gardens and Landscaping), and Japanese Ornamental items as well as Japanese Gift Wrapping.

The Exhibition will be opened by the Ambassador for Japan in Sri Lanka, Akio Suda and Mrs. Dewi Suda on April 2.

In order to provide an opportunity for the public who are interested in learning about the Art of Ikebana and Origami, the President of the Lanka-Japan Friendship Society Lalitha Rajapaksa, has arranged demonstrations, which will be held as follows:

Ikebana florala arrangements demonstrations will be held on April 2, at 4.30 pm and April 3 at 10.30 am. Origami demonstration will be held on April 3 and 4.The Bonsai, Ikebana and Origami Associations together with individual exhibitors will present their exhibits.

As in the past, these exhibits will be of a very high standard and will afford the public a rare opportunity to view these items of Japanese Art which are unique in style, simplicity and are natural and meaningful. Symbolic and Mythical these Arts are appreciated Worldwide.

The Exhibition will be Free of Charge for School Children on the 4th of April, from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm and a Nominal Entrance Fee of Rs. 20.00 will be charged from the public on the 2nd from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm and on the 3rd and 4th from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm.
