Deadlyne 21's musical mantra :

Melody, Power, Groove

by Rikaza Hassan

An original band with a 'keep it real' attitude, they play a fusion of genres including rock, pop, jazz and classical among others to a nice blend of 'easy to listen to' music. Their mantra: Melody, Power, Groove.

"Unique to ourselves" is how the four guys of Deadlyne 21 describe themselves. This extremely talented quartet comprises three heavyweights of the Sri Lankan music industry plus one guy from the land of good ole Uncle Sam.The foursome have been in operation for nearly a year.

Their music says Azlan, the frontman as well as the sole lyricist of the band, is a "Staind meets Incubus meets Korn thing." These are "just four ordinary guys with a common passion for music" whose vibes can relate to the ordinary guy or gal out there.

"Music is about communication" says Azlan and they write about the experiences that they've gone through in their everyday lives, be they positive or negative. Basically their music "does not require a college degree to understand it." "It is impossible to hate us. You may like us or you may dislike us but can't hate us. That's the kind of music we play." They are also very thick friends; music may have brought them together but it is their friendship that they treasure the most. Each of them are also quite proficient in playing each others instruments.

Once they've finished their four-hour practice sessions, they usually goof around with all the equipment, taking turns with the instruments, like bashing Robert's drums for example.

Their debut gig was to back up the solo artistes at Onstage, forcing them to play a whole range of music from various artistes, something they took on as a challenge. (The challenge this writer was faced with was of course trying to get these guys to stop talking once the interview was over.) Since then they have played in quite a number of concerts with other artistes as well as in private parties (where they have little kids asking for autographs, big ego boosts for the guys).

"Why Deadlyne 21"? I ask. "Because we're all under 21," they answer in unison. The numeral in the name also makes them more unique as they're the only band in the country with a number in their name. This bunch of not bad looking guys are also all very unattached at the moment, so all you ladies out there are very free to send them your phone numbers, email addresses or other contact information.

Extremely passionate about music, it is more than just a leisure time activity to them. "To us it's like a hobby that we can never let go off. We will always be playing whether together or alone for the entirety of our lives." Their dream? "to put up our own studio someday with the very best of equipment, etc." So make sure to check these guys out at their launch concert "somewhere around the end of April" together with a smattering of other bands and solo artistes including past winners of TNL Onstage, and get ready to be blown away. (P. S. Don't expect to go to work the next day, you're not going to be able to even move your feet.)
