English Literature made easy :

Oliver Twist - by Charles Dickens

Chapter 3 - Stop Thief

Fagin feeds the boys well and trains them to steal pocket books, handkerchiefs watches etc., which the boys perform marvellously. He makes the boys play a game which teaches them to steal little things as people pass by.

The jew puts a small snuffbox, a watch, a note case, a spectacle case, and a handkerchief into his various pockets and walks round the room like a gentleman walking about the streets. Then the boys have to try and get these articles without being seen or felt. He is taken up by Oliver, who plays the game well.

After a few days, Oliver is allowed to go out with Dodger and Charley Bates. On the way Dodger teases little boys while the others lift apples and onions from the traders' stalls by the wayside. Dodger snatches a handkerchief from an old gentleman and runs fast and Oliver follows.

But he is quickly tired out and finally stops and is given a blow by a man standing on the pavement. In spite of the crowd that gathers a police officer arrives on the scene and tries to make the situation worse for Oliver. He is taken to the Police Station. But the old gentleman, the owner of the handkerchief sympathises with Oliver. The man in the book stall appears on the scene and gives evidence to prove that Oliver is not the thief.

He is then released. Mr. Brownlow, the old gentleman pities Oliver and takes him to his house in Pentoville.

Chapter 4 - Billsykes comes

When Charley Bates and Dodger goes back to Fagin's house, he is sitting by the fire, eating his meal. He is furious that the boys missed Oliver.

Bill Sykes, another companion of Fagin enters the house at that time.

Sykes looks terrible. He has broad heavy face with a beard and scowling eyes. Both Fagin and Sykes are alarmed. Suddenly Nancy, who meets Oliver appears on the scene and Nancy is persuaded by threats, promises and bribes to go to the police station and find out Oliver's fate.

Nancy is a clever girl. She returns with the news, that Oliver was taken ill, then released and taken away by the old gentleman. Fagin sends Nancy Dodger and Charley to find out Oliver's whereabouts.

Sykes follows Gagin prepares to leave after he has hidden the things he gets the boys to steal - watches and jewellery.
