The assassins had then fled on foot while some persons who had witnessed the shooting had run helter skelter fearing for their lives. OIC Jayalath said "Although the motive for the killing is not known it is believed that it is another underworld killing. Police have not identified the killers so far." Selladorai has had a criminal record, police said. At the time of the incident a Sunday Observer staffer was on his way to office in his car. He heard the sound of gun shots and had seen people running in all directions. However due to the stampede he was not able to proceed in that direction and had to turn away onto another road. The Fort Magistrate Sarath C. Karunaratne visited the scene and held the Magisterial inquiry. The post-mortem examination was also held at the Colombo JMO's office.
