All beneficiaries get subsistence payments by Rohan Mathes In payment of subsidies to tsunami affected areas to displaced families, 53 per cent of the beneficiaries in Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee Districts have received their family subsistence payment of Rs.5000 and Rs.2500, Finance Ministry sources said. The Finance Ministry sources told the Sunday Observer that up to March 22, 44,688 have received Rs.426,430,000, a 23.3 per cent in Ampara District, 35,879 received Rs.313,157,500, a 17.1 per cent in Batticaloa District and 25,523 received Rs.230,912,500, a 12.6 per cent in the Trincomalee District. Statistics therefore point out that from a total of 197,419 beneficiaries, 116,090 have been paid Rs.970,500,000, in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee Districts only from an 'all districts' total of Rs.1,829,857,500. In effect, this confirms that of the total displaced, 53 per cent of Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee have received their subsistence payment to date. In contrast, in the Galle District, 22,949 beneficiaries have received Rs.222,930,000, which amounts to 12.2 per cent of the total, the sources further said.
