Relief allocations for first stage Rs8.7b by Anura Maitipe Under the first stage of relief measures the Government has allocated Rs. 8.7 billion for the victims of tsunami affected areas, State Bank sources told the Sunday Observer. Sources said that 182,943 affected persons in Ampara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Gampaha, Kalutara, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Jaffna have been provided with relief grants of Rs. 5,000 per person. These funds had been channelled through People's Bank and the Bank of Ceylon. However, 90 percent of disbursement of these funds had been made by People's Bank. These funds had been provided on the recommendations made by the Grama Sevaka and the Divisional District Secretaries. The Government has also provided a non-repayment grant of Rs. 250,000 for affected families to reconstruct their houses. In addition, loans at low interest rate up to Rs. 500,000 have also been provided. The needy could apply for the loan from the nearest People's Bank or Bank of Ceylon, he said. The Government has also initiated a new loan scheme for small and medium entrepreneurs and businessmen to recommence their traditional livelihood. They could obtain loans up to Rs. 5 million at the interest rate of six percent with one year grace period, he added.
