Globalising the rural communities by Chanuka Mannapperuma The Small and Rural Industries Ministry has launched a novel program to take modern technology to village level with a view to boost the traditional industries scattered islandwide. The program is aimed at manufacturing quality products to pose a challenge to imported products and thereby, laying foundation for creating a better national economy. As the initial project, the Ministry has now laid special emphasis on improving shoes and leather manufacturing in 'Niraviya village' in the Anuradhapura District. Accordingly, necessary infrastructure facilities and modern technology will be provided to strengthen the entrepreneurs of the village. "This program is being implemented under the 1000 industrial village project 'Guru Peheyen Ran Peheyata' launched by the Small and Rural Industries Ministry seeking to develop the villages by providing new technology. The Government launched this comprehensive program to give a new life to the country's traditional industries which were once a lucrative livelihood contributing immensely to the rural economy, Small and Rural Industries Minister K. D. Lalkantha told the Sunday Observer. The Ministry will be conducting a special technical session from March 15-28 to provide wider knowledge to the industrialists living in the area. He said, we have good demand from foreign countries for leather related products. For this program the Ministry has allocated Rs. 2,334,350 for each village.
