'Siyathena Nivahana' provides permanent houses to tsunami victims in Matara

"Siyathena Nivahana" Housing Programme to construct permanent houses for Tsunami victims in Matara district was inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Housing & Construction Industry, Eastern Province Education & Irrigation Development, Mr. Chandrasiri Gajadeera recently.

Around 8000 houses have been destroyed or partially damaged during the tsunami in Matara district and majority of families are at present staying in temporary shelters. The construction work for permanent houses commenced in Polhena and Thotamune Grama Niladari divisions.

The construction will take place according to technical guidelines provided by the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA). The beneficiary families selected for permanent houses to be constructed under "Siyathena Nivahana" programme will be settled temporarily within the project sites itself till the permanent houses are completed.

Deputy Minister, Mr. Chandrasiri Gajadeera speaking at the commencement of the programme said "Today we were able to commence construction of permanent houses for tsunami victims in Matara.

In addition to "Siyathena Nivahana" Housing Programme, we will make use of other housing programmes too implemented by various Agencies to complete 3000 permanent housing units to accommodate all affected families in the district.

The European countries like Austria and France have come to help tsunami victims in Matara and we are really grateful to them. In addition to housing aid, many donors in those countries have consented to contribute to the foster parents schemes aimed at parentless children."

For the construction of houses at Polhena financial assistance is provided by donors in Austria while Matara Laurient Friendship Association of France is aiding the construction of new houses at Paramulla.

The Divisional Secretary, Matara Mr. Thusitha Wanigasinghe, Mr. and Mrs. Kamal Wankmuller of Austria, the local representative of Matara Laurient Friendship Association, Mr. Upul Devasurendra, Southern Provincial Councillor, Mr. Bindu Wijesinghe, Chairman, Building Materials Corporation, Mr. Lalith Andrahennadi also attended this occasion.
