Speculations aplenty

At a meeting with President Kumaratunga at the President's House, Premier Rajapakse told her that a majority of senior SLFP Parliamentarians were opposed to the idea of a referendum, the Thinakkural said in its lead story on Monday.

A Sri Lankan mother Mary Dias and her daughter Mary Dayalan were stabbed to death in their apartment in Rome, Italy and the mother's sister Pushparani was taken into Police custody.

The Thinakaran quoting a visiting Canadian senator said the purpose of their visit was to prepare a report on the LTTE with a view to ban the organisation in Canada, the Thinakaran said.

However, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who had a meeting with the visiting Canadian senators had advised them not to ban the LTTE in their country at this juncture, the Virakesari reported. The Thinakaran in its lead story quoted SLMM spokesperson and said the LTTE would give them permission within the next few days to inspect Iranamadu in Vanni to ascertain whether they have aircraft.

The Sudaroli said a BBC Sandeshya opinion poll has said Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar is favourite to become next presidential candidate.

The Thinakaran quoted Minister Muththu Sivalingam who had a meeting with the President on Monday evening and said by 15 May, 4179 plantation youth would be provided with teaching and clerical jobs and added that a decision had been reached with the President in this regard.

The Sudaroli said that Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would visit New Delhi next month in a bid to bring pressure on the government through India to hold the presidential election at the correct time.

The Thinakkural in its lead story on Wednesday quoted Presidential spokesman Harim Peiris and said smooth progress is being made in the talks between the government and the LTTE to establish a joint mechanism to provide relief to the tsunami hit Northeast and he was optimistic of its success.

The Sudaroli in its lead story said that President Kumaratunga in a letter to Prime Minister Rajapakse directed him not to interfere with the tsunami rehabilitation in the East since such work was being carried out directly under her supervision.

Prime Minister Rajapakse on a tour in London met with Irish Republican Army topnotch and held talks on their experience in achieving peace with the British government.

The Thinakaran in its lead story quoted the SLMM and said the killing spree in and around Welikanda was a threat to the security of the entire East.

The Thinakkural on Thursday quoted, head of rebuilding tsunami devastated areas, Mano Tittawela and said the delay in commencing rebuilding operations was due mainly because of consultations with organisations involved in the work.

Swiss officials told the visiting LTTE delegation that ceasefire and normalcy was important for a joint mechanism between the Tigers and the government.

The Virakesari in its lead story quoted Foreign Minister Kadirgamar's interview with the BBC in "hard talk" and said the LTTE's agreement for the joint mechanism would pave the way to recommence peace talks and added that his personal opinion was that the Tigers were not that strong as they claim to be.

The Sudaroli in its lead carried excerpts of the same interview and said the JVP had assured him that they won't leave the government in the event of establishing a joint mechanism between the LTTE and the government and the newspaper expressing its own opinion on this matter said it was not the truth.
