Royal, overall athletic champs by Srian Obeyesekere Royal College, with 444 points, dominated the inaugural Track and Field Triangular 2005 making a clean sweep to take the three outstanding challenge trophies including for overall champs with arch rivals S. Thomas' College (303) and Trinity College (263) in second and third places respectively hosted by Royal. Royal landed the Bruin Challenge Trophy for 'Overall Champions', Gunasoma Nanayakkara Challenge Trophy and the Brookie D' Silva Trophy, but the athletes of all three schools were told by a veteran athlete of yesteryear - Summa Navaratnam, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest - one of the oldest living Royalists from the track and field, that there was much more to be done if they were to make the grade. "The very reason that this meet was mooted was because none of the three schools had won the Tarbet Shield in the last 23 years. In fact, Royal last won it far back as in 1982 and S. Thomas' in 1979," urged Navaratnam who drove home the point that ' the base in any sports is to learn to run, and therefore it was imperative in athletics.' He asked coaches not to count on stars, but on placings. "Winning is not enough. You must have more athletes participating as well," he advised.
