Vietnam to mount clean up against deadly bird flu

HANOI, Saturday (AFP) Vietnam said Saturday it will mount a large-scale campaign next month to clean up farms hit by the bird flu virus that killed dozens of people across the country in the past year.

The campaign would focus on "cleaning up poultry farms and cages in all provinces and cities to stop the type A flu virus from spreading in the environment," the health ministry said on its website.

It would be organised by a standing committee in charge of combating the disease, which has killed at least 34 people in Vietnam since the end of 2003.

"The campaign must be implemented in April 2005, starting on April 1," said the website statement, without giving details on how the operation would take in the country's fragmented poultry industry.

The announcement comes after two more people tested positive this week in the north of the country. A 17-year-old girl died on the night between Thursday and Friday. A woman of 40 from Quang Ninh province bordering China has also tested positive but she is in a stable condition.
