Marine killed:US death toll 1,516

BAGHDAD, Saturday (AFP) A US Marine was killed in action Friday in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar, the US Army announced in a statement Saturday.

The soldier with I Marine Expeditionary Force "was killed in action yesterday, while conducting security and stability operations in the Al Anbar province," the statement said.

It gave no further details about his death, saying that "the release of more details about the incident could place our personnel at greater risk."

Al Anbar, with a Sunni Muslim majority and including the towns of Fallujah and Ramadi, is one of Iraq's main flashpoints.

This latest death took to 1,516 the number of US military personnel killed in Iraq since the invasion of the country just over two years ago, according to a toll compiled from Pentagon figures.
