Controversy erupts over appointments to plantation schools From Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan The LTTE has said that the verdict of the Supreme Court on the P-TOMS had proved that no resolution for the ethnic conflict of Sri Lanka could be found within the present constitution. Commenting on the issue the LTTE's spokesperson Thaya master said: "Though we signed the P-TOMS, we had been always querying whether it would be implemented. We knew it would be prevented by some means". (Thinakural (TK) 17/07/05). The LTTE's Intelligence chief leader S.Pott Amman has accused the Government of acting in a provocative manner to put the blame on the LTTE for resuming the war. He made these allegations against the Government in a commemoration event held last week. He warned further that war could be resumed at any moment. (TK 17/07/05). Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the gazette notice issued to fill the vacancies in the plantation sector schools on the basis of violation of fundamental rights. It has also sought an interim injunction on the implementation of the gazette until the final verdict is given. The petition was filed yesterday. In a statement issued yesterday the party said: Gazette notice pertaining to the appointments to be made for the vacancies in the plantation sector, Tamil schools requires the applicant to have passed in the G.C.E. (O/L) with a simple pass in Hinduism or Christianity or Roman Catholic and a pass in Tamil language. The above stipulation deprives the fundamental right of those who have obtained a pass in Islam or Buddhism. (TK - 19/07/05). Confidence between the two sides could be amassed only through maintaining the Ceasefire Agreement intact. It is an impossible task to hold talks with the Government while it is waging a shadow war upon us, LTTE's political wing leader S.P. Thamilchelvan said after meeting with the Norway delegation. Feasibility of the future meetings depends on the good will the Government and the forces would display, he said. (Virakesari (VK) - 21/07/05). An organisation called 'Aikiya Thamizh Ullangal Inayam' is distributing hand-outs in the hill country insisting the Tamils living there to be concerned to register themselves as voters. The notice states: It's important for us to hold franchise to prove that we are permanent citizens of this country and to participate in national politics. (VK - 21/07/05). A friendly meeting between the LTTE and few dignitaries of the Muslim community was held after a long while day before yesterday at the political office of the LTTE in Paavattan, Thirukovil. (SudarOli(SOI) - 22/07/05). Unexpected huge demonstrations were held in various parts of the central province yesterday urging the authorities to expedite the teaching appointments for the plantation sector Tamil schools and appoint only the Indian origin Tamils. School students, their parents and teachers took to the streets vehemently displaying their demands in several areas including Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, Thalawakele, Aagarapathana, Hatton, Bogawanthalawa and Kotagala. (SOI - 23/07/05). A demonstration was held in Kandy near the clock tower junction yesterday
organised by the Central Sri Lanka Muslim Forum opposing Muslims being
neglected in the teaching appointments for the plantation sector schools. (TK
