Conveying Impressions

by Aditha Dissanayake

"Art is not an end in itself, but a means of addressing humanity" Said Moussorgsky. Undoubtedly, the 466 paintings on display at Impressions 2005, the seventh in a series of bi-annual exhibitions organized by the Teen Art Club of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya, stimulating the mind and galvanising the on looker, in their differing manners of form and colour adhered to this definition to the smallest drop of paint on the canvas.

Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapakse, a past pupil and Chief Guest at the opening ceremony, in her address acknowledged art as a "way of expressing one's mind, to bring out beautiful thoughts about the surroundings captivating them with the mystery of colour and shape".

Sr. M. Canice, Principal, emphazied the therapeutic effects of art in a context of natural disaster, war and stress filled lives. Quoting Prof. Yogi Koichiro she said "Art...is an individual's search for identity. It is a universal language which expresses one's grasp of reality and the uniqueness of each individual. The process of personality development and identity formation which takes place in education and school is enhanced by developing the artistic abilities of the students. It is important that parents and teachers become aware of this".

The paintings ranging from birds to designs to women bathing by the river, God Ganesh, gossip etc. were startling, thought provoking, and calming. Guided by the two teachers in charge of the Teen Art Club, B. A. S. Manourie Andree and N. Vijayakanthan, the exhibition provided a gateway for budding artists to discover their own style and uniqueness, with paint, brush and paper.
