PM condemns attack on church Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse told Parliament on Tuesday that the government vehemently condemned the recent attack on the Holy Cross Church in Polonnaruwa and it would soon bring the culprits responsible for the dastardly act to book. Speaking on the adjournment debate on the recent attack on the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pulathisigama, Polonnaruwa the Prime Minister further said people of all communities in this country have the freedom to profess and follow any religion of their choice and emphasised that as a responsible government they would never allow anyone to destroy places of religious worship. The Prime Minister said: "We wish to express our deep sorrow over this incident. As a responsible government we will always deal firmly with religious clashes of this nature. The statement issued by the Buddhist prelate of Somawathiya clearly reflect the attitude of the entire Buddhist public on this whole episode." The Prime Minister said, "As Buddhists we should all lead our lives without causing hindrance to other religious or exerting pressure on them. Necessary steps will be taken soon to punish the perpetrators of this barbaric act". The Prime Minister who emphasised that the government would not act against any religion categorically stated that the government would not leave room for such incidents in the future. |
