UNP duty to protect democracy - G. L. Peiris by Ananda Kannangara The recently concluded "Janabala Meheuma" by the UNP will be followed by a youth convention in Colombo next month and also a major rally in September with the participation of women to persuade the Government to hold the Presidential Election before December this year, UNP spokesman Prof. G.L. Peiris said. "As a major political party it is the responsibility of the UNP to protect democracy at the highest level and we are compelled to demand from the Government to hold the next Presidential election at the correct time according to the constitution," he said. Prof. Peris denied that the President took oaths for a second time secretly in November 2000, mentioning that there was no gazette notification of such an oath taking. "I was the Constitutional Affairs minister during that period and even as a responsible minister in the Cabinet I too was not informed about this swearing-in," he said. He said the UNP's position was very clear that the sovereign right of the people to elect a President after six years should prevail according to the Constitution. Mentioning about the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) Prof. Peris said that the UNP is supporting the Government's endeavour of preserving the agreement, signed with the LTTE two years ago, considering the value of human lives, the properties and also future development activities in the country. |
