Finalists found in President Gold Cup VB tourneys by Leslie Fernando The finalists in the men's and women's tourneys were found in the President Gold Cup Volleyball Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and sponsored by Dialog GSM and played at National Youth Services Council indoor stadium at Maharagama on Sunday, July 17. The third stage matches played at National Level worked off on a league basis saw Golden Birds SC of Gampaha and Aruna SC Hambantota qualifying to the men's final while Siyanatharu SC Gampaha and United Front SC Dambadeniya reaching the women's final. Four top teams in both men's and women's tourneys were played on a league basis to find the finalists in the National Level Stage. In the men's tournament, Golden Birds SC defeated Thoduwawa SC Puttalam by 3 sets to 2, Lucky Silks SC Kalutara 3-1 and Thalagamwaduwa Aruna SC Hambantota. Meanwhile Aruna SC beat Thoduwawa SC Puttalam 3-0 Lucky Silks SC Kalutara 3-2, and lost to Golden Birds SC Gampaha 0-3. The men's third place went to Thoduwawa SC Puttalam defeating Lucky Silks SC Kalutara 3-0. In the women's tournament, Siyanatharu SC Gampaha beat Central SC Anuradhapura 3-0, Slimtex SC Kurunegala 3-0 and United Front SC Dambadeniya 3-0, while United SC Dambadeniya had wins over Slimtex SC 3-2, and Central SC, Anuradhapura 3-0. The third place in the women's tournament went to Central SC Anuradhapura who beat Slimtex SC, Kurunegala. This tournament was conducted in three stages - district, provincial and national level with 412 teams both (men and women) and 5000 players participating. Cash awards and trophies were awarded to the winner and runners-up in the district and provincial tournaments. The finals of both men and women on National Level will be played in the first week in August (the dates to be fixed) by Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation at the NYSC Council Indoor Stadium at Maharagama. Susil Ranasinghe, Secretary, Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation said that champions will receive Rs. 100,000 each President Volleyball Challenge Trophies, medals and certificates. The runners-up in both tournaments will receive Rs. 40,000 each Dialog GSM Challenge Trophies, medals and certificates. The third place teams will receive Rs. 25,000 each Dialog GSM Trophies, medals and certificates. The Most Outstanding volleyballers will be presented special prizes. These players will be selected at the final by a panel appointed by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation. |
