Sri Lanka retains place in Group III by Lal Gunesekera Sri Lanka, who retained their place in the Davis Cup (Asia/Oceanic Zone Group III) for next year's competition, were fourth among the eight countries at Hong Kong last week. They finished behind Hong Kong, Malaysia and Vietnam, but ahead of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and Tajikistan with Hong Kong and Malaysia qualifying to play in Group II next year (2006). Qatar and Tajikistan were demoted to Group IV. After beating bottom seeds Qatar (3-0) and Bahrain (3-0), Sri Lanka, lost to Vietnam (1-2) in the group matches, lost to both Hong Kong (0-3) and Malaysia (0-3) in the final round play-offs. Harshana Godamanne and Renouk Wijemanne lost their singles to Malaysia's Selvan Veerasingham 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 and Yow-Ming 2-6, 1-6 respectively, while in the doubles, Rajiv Rajapakse and Oshada Wijemanne were beaten by the Malaysian pair of Adrian and Qi Hao Tan 6-3, 2-6, 9-7. Then against Hong Kong, Wayne Wong beat Harshana Godamanne (7-5, 6-2) and Hiu-Tung Yu beat Renouk Wijemanne (7-5, 6-2) in the singles, while Brian Hung and Martin Sayer beat Godamanne and Wijemanne (7-5, 6-1) in the doubles. |
