More facilities to tap the optimum from professionals by Lalin Fernandopulle The Ministry of Science and Technology will provide more facilities to scientists and technologists to obtain optimum services for the country. Our professionals leave the country to seek recognition and better prospects abroad, Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Tissa Vitharana said. If we were to develop the country we need to provide better working conditions and good salaries to professionals. In other countries professionals are paid handsomely for their services. The government will attend to the welfare of the professional community and obtain their services to develop the country. The Ministry of Science and Technology with the help of our Diplomatic Missions will seek the services of expatriate professionals on a part-time basis to help the development projects, Prof. Vitharana said. Prof. Vitharana said though the government spends much money on education its return is not satisfactory. University students after graduation go overseas in search of greener pastures. There is a severe dearth of resource personnel in the country as a result of the increase in foreign employment. Therefore,it is time that policymakers give serious attention to the problem to check the brain drain. We need experts to share their knowledge and skills with industrialists and entrepreneurs. It is with the research and analytical skills of experts that the country could progress, Prof. Vitharana said. Those specialised in various fields could contribute their knowledge on scientific and technological research through the Vidya Dana Thakshana educational program conducted at divisional secretary level by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
