Flora awarded SLS 789 certification by Elmo Leonard Pee Bee Management Services Ltd, manufacturers of the Flora brand of toilet rolls last week became the first local company to obtain SLS 789 certification for a range of toilet rolls it turns out. The director general of Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) Ms Shirani Weragoda presenting the award said that when a manufacturer obtains SLS standard certifications, it helps the consumer choose a good product, while the manufacturer makes use of the markings to improve market share. Weragoda called upon other manufacturers to obtain SLS standard specifications. The SLSI head, explained the complexity of obtaining SLS markings. Carrying the SLS specifications is an ongoing process; SLSI carries out audits and surprise checks on the manufacturing process. Weragoda hoped Pee Bee would obtain ISO 9001 and higher standard specifications in the future. The SLS marking includes the Flora range toilet tissue single roll, 2,4, 6 and 10 roll packs. The raw materials are virgin pulp of ISO 9001 specifications imported from multinational companies, Pee Bee managing director, Kishore Surtani said. While products such as toilet rolls are often considered a wasteful luxury, in this instance, it has demand from all five star hotels, tourist resorts, restaurants, supermarket chains and wholesale and retail outlets in the Metropolis. The institutions which buy the product include hospitals (used during surgical operations) and janitorial services. The manufacturers claim they hold 60 percent of the local market share. The manufacture of toilet rolls locally is also part of import substitution and a means of livelihood for their 200 employees. Pee Bee began in 1979 in Ratmalana and now has its factory in Homagama. The manufacture of different tissue products involves converting raw material tissue into jumbo rolls to finished products through a process of embossing, cutting and folding, it was explained to the media. The brand identifies itself with being a soft disposable tissue. The Flora brand range includes toilet tissue rolls, facial tissue boxes, paper serviettes, kitchen towels, handkerchief tissues, industrial multi-fold wipes, industrial hand towels and industrial toilet rolls. The Flora brand is exported to India, Maldives and Australia. |
