35 delegates attend international logistics sales parley

by Elmo Leonard

SDV Air Link Sri Lanka hosted the SDV International logistics regional sales conference in Colombo, on April 28 and 29. SDV, with roots in France, is one of the top 20 logistics players in the world, being active in 85 countries. The regional meeting was attended by 35 SDV delegates, 25 from India with representation from France, UK, Spain, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. SDV marks its presence in Sri Lanka from January 2005, in alliance with the DSI Samson Group.

DSI managing director, Ranjith Hettiarachchy said that while his group has diversified into diverse goods manufacture, the decision to join an international logistics group is because Sri Lanka is an emerging logistics hub.

Sri Lanka is strategically located between China and India, two of the world's major emerging economies. The island nation also has free trade agreements with India and Pakistan and possibilities of more trade agreements with SAARC member nations. Thus, Sri Lanka poses the promise of being a logistics and shipping hub in its region. The main objective of the sales conference was to exchange ideas to further develop the existing trade routes between India and Sri Lanka with France, UK and USA.

With Indian ports yet underdeveloped, Sri Lanka was emerging as a logistics hub, for freighting of goods to India, the Middle East and eastward of its borders, Hettiarachchy said.

SDV, managing director in India, Sunandan Raj said that SDV made an investment, coming into Sri Lanka taking a small step, intending it to grow into a giant leap. SDV managing director in Malaysia, Philippe Lortal will now be posted in India and take on the responsibility of overlooking Sri Lanka.

SDV's managing director in Sri Lanka, Palitha Kulasinghe said that SDV International Logistics belongs to the Ballore Group, which is one of the top 250 category companies in Europe and employs 30,000 people, worldwide. SDV International Logistics incorporates the main French entities of the SDV group which deals with international transport and logistics: SCAC, SCAC Airservice, TTA, Transcap International, Gies, SDV Aerospace and Transinor.

Today, reunited under the banner of SDV International Logistics, they pool-in their potential and expertise to provide customers with an optimised transportation service, regardless of the origin or the destination of the transported goods, Kulasinghe said.

Claimed, specialists in all areas of transportation and logistics, SDV International Logistics provides customised solutions, using advanced technologies. SDV expertise lies on an in-house, built-in efficient IT system, a reactive and reliable international network and a close relationship with the major operators of international transportation.

The sea freight sector has been the core activity of the group since its creation. Today, the group has partnership cooperation with more than 40 international shipping lines.

The presence of SDV International Logistics in all the main ports provide its customers with a wide range of services to satisfy all their needs; from break-bulk to container shipping, from full container loads to consolidated shipments, from general cargo to specialised transport and from small parcel to out-of-gauge pieces, Kulasinghe said.
