Politics unpacked Love at first sight
Bye-bye turns to bhai bhai. It was Indo-Pak bhai bhai - or Indo-Pakisatani friendship of a high order when two press attaches of the Indian and Pakistani embassies introduced themselves to each other, and exchanged telephone numbers with an enthusiasm that Nixon would have found difficult to muster when he visited China. Two ladies - both demure - exchanged numbers as if they were long lost friends, from longtime friendly countries. Being utterly gladdened, we said bhai-bhai hurriedly, and left them to it. One curious writing type, wanted to know from a juror who selected the award winner whether the UNESCO press freedom award is ever awarded posthumously to any brave journalist who may have passed away in the line of duty?? "Unfortunately," said the portly juror, "one needs to stay alive to win it.'' Being Sri Lankan to his fingertips, the scribe deadpanned ''well, that's the hardest thing in these parts.'' He can't be accused of being entirety untruthful, at least considering scribes and their cameramen in some parts of the country who come under the gun of various brigands. Fishing for jokes
One engaging sort, who knows the man better than others, spoke to him about his angling habit. The gentleman went on at length about fishing in the Eastern Province, sounding clearly and expert on both. At which point, another pen-wielder joked "so you are fishing in troubled waters?'' We are not very sure if what was strictly meant to be a joke was taken as one - but we sure do hope so. J-biz, different sort
It was rumoured that he was all set to buy a news enterprise, if the election had a different outcome. That's off - but now we have the news that he certainly is the money behind at least one paper that's to roll of the presses. Bye, Ram?
Soon after that April 28th event, newspapers across the board carried acres of comment about him - all well meant of course. But this year, on his anniversary, those fans seem to have all forgotten to remember, we think. Else, why is it that only this, the so-called stately newspaper, carried articles that remembered Ram on his first death anniversary?? |
