Hartal in Jaffna

Jaffna peninsula observed complete hartal yesterday opposing the brutal attack carried out by armed men at the Uthayan newspaper office premises last week. (SudarOli (SOI) - 05/05)

The National leader of Tamil Eelam V. Prabakaran has ordered to allocate grants from the national fund for the families of the 'Uthayan' employees who lost their lives in last week's gunfire. (SOI - 05/05)

'Tamil people cannot be alienated from the National freedom struggle by military atrocities and intimidations' said the Tamil National Alliance in a statement issued condemning the attack on 'Uthayan'. (SOI - 05/05)

Yesterday in Tamil Nadu, hundreds of protesters who attempted to stage a demonstration against attacks on Sri Lankan Tamils, military violence and oppression were arrested by the police. The joint committee of Tamil Eelam Liberation supporters had called for the campaign. The campaign was to be led by the head of the committee and a prominent political figure in TamilNadu P. Nedumaran. (Virakesari (VK) - 04/05)

It is learnt that 4 suspects arrested by the army in connection with the Uthayan attack in Jaffna are innocent students. They have been residing in a rented house near the newspaper office. (Thinakural (TKL) - 03/05)

Motor bikes and push bikes from other districts are now prohibited from entering the Trincomalee district from last midnight onwards. Meanwhile, special passes will be given to bikes used in the district. A soldier and 4 civilians were killed in an explosion of a claymore bomb strapped to a push bike in Trincomalee yesterday. 'India should immediately focus its attention on the present crisis that the Sri Lankan Tamils are forced to face. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should invite the Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians and hold talks with them to get to know what is happening there' urged P. Nedumaran, leader of 'Ulaha Thamizhar Paeravai (World Tamil People Forum) at a book launch in Chennai last Friday. (SOI - 02/05)
