Happenings / People Saamaya from Jayasri by Mahes Perera
Jayasri the Sri Lankan group based in Vienna released their third CD Saamaya - Peace in Sri Lanka recently. The talented band in their reggae style have popularised Sri Lankan music on the continent, ever since they started out as a band in Austria more than a decade ago. "Our CD will be launched at Hikkaduwa at a live show" says Rohitha J when he dropped by at our offices to give us the good news. "The CD contains twelve songs, the lyrics for which were created by me and three other talented Sri Lankans - Christina and Ruwan who are working in Cyprus, and Nishani. The music was arranged by the whole band. We are now a multi-cultural band and as such we draw on the creativity of the members. Our keyboardist Pavez hails from Bangladesh, while the guitarist Mathias is an Austrian. Of course, besides myself - I play the rhythm guitar and am responsible for the vocals - my brother Rohan is the bassist, there's Sumal on drums and for percussion our guy is Moses. I'd like to categorise the music of Saamaya as Asian underground and am confident it will bring us success" comments Rohitha flashing that characteristic smile of his. No sooner he returns to Vienna, Jayasri are scheduled to perform at a concert in Paris, France on April 30. "This concert has been arranged by the Negombo Association in Paris and the funds collected will go towards the homeless children in Negombo which is a truly worthy cause. Thereafter, we will be flying into Italy, Germany and hopefully to LA and New York. In Vienna the summer season festivities will be on and we will be playing at the Reggae festival, the Sri Lankan, Cricketers Summer Ball and at the Summer Jam at Burg Arena. This year in December we hope to be in Colombo with our full band for a performance" says Rohitha J before he departed. We hope so too - we've heard the story before!
