Short story

Annoying...yet loving

"Stop!" She screamed. The balloons filled with water kept splashing on her, bursting as they did. Thilini was drenched with water. She ran around the garden trying to hide from her elder sister, Ganga, Finally Ganga, engulfed with laughter, left her sister in peace.'

***

Thilini found herself drifting into her past recollections. She was waiting in anticipation. She was smiling to herself. She looked at the time. There were two more hours loft. She allowed herself to be carried away into her past.

***

'"Thilini, get up sleepy head!"

"Sis, give me two more minutes," Thilini said sleepily.

"Two more minutes? But I am bored!"

The next thing Thilini knew, there was a bucket of cold water pouring on her.

"Fine, I am awake. Stop it." She was soaked to the bone and Ganga was laughing at her. Anger built inside Thilini.

"You know, you annoying one-heck-of-a sister, you are so pathetic. I just asked for two minutes. You didn't have to pour water on me."

"Oh well! I got up early in the morning today because a rather stinking odour entered my nostrils. Guess what? It was coming from you. So I thought you could have a wash. And that's just what I did." She was still laughing.

"Whatever!" Thilini went to the bathroom and got dressed.

The cuckoo bird cooed int he distance.

Both, Ganga and Thilini had got their school holidays. Even though they were very close, they kept annoying each other. Of course they always became friendly again.

Breakfast

Thilini went to the breakfast table.

"Thili, what do you want for breakfast?"

"Anything you eat! But please no vegetables, no nutritious food and definitely no milk!"

"I'll tell you what? Don't eat!" Ganga mocked. And they were laughing their heads off.

After breakfast, they went into their garden. They played badminton.

"Can you serve the shuttlecock again, please?'

"Here we go again" and they played until both of them were too exhausted to continue.

"You want a drink"" Ganga asked.

"Sure" Thilini said gleefully.

Soon after, they rested.

In the evening they were back in the garden.

"Let's play badminton again." Thilini said.

"No! Cricket." Ganga suggested.

"No! Badminton."

"Cricket!"

"Badminton!"

"Criiicket!"

"Baadminton!"

"I won't play with you!" Ganga said.

"Umm... I think cricket will be nice," Thilini compromised. "I want to bat first," Thilini said.

"I want to!"

Want

"I don't care what you want, but I want to bat first," Ganga said furiously.

"Forget it! I am going to my room."

"Uh... Thili, I think you should bat first."

They played cricket all evening. During their play, Thilini cried, "Owwwww!!!" Ganga was so worried. She came running to Thilini.

"What's wrong? Are you okay?"

"Got you! Nothing is wrong!" Thilini mocked at Ganga.

"You spoilt little brat! You ridiculous earthling! You scared me. I thought you were hurt."

"Ohhh! So you care abut me!"

"You annoying - annoying -" and Ganga had no words to go on. As usual, as sisters, they became friends again.'

Back in the present, Thilini remembered how they had always remained best of friends. Thilini recalled the day when they had to separate.

***

'"So Thili, be a good girl. I won't be gone for long. I'll call you. Don't be a pain to mom. Write to me. Time will go so fast, that you wouldn't even miss me. Besides after my higher education I'll come back." She was holding back her tears.

"Sure sis, I'll try to be a very good girl. Oh yeah, if there are cute boys there, let me know. But please make sure that their noses are not flat, not too pointy, not crooked and not like Pinocchio's." They had a laugh.

"I'll Make sure." Next they were crying in each other's arms.

"I'll miss you a lot," Ganga said.

"Liar, you'll find a boyfriend there and totally forget about me. If by chance it happens, I'll kick your boyfriend's butt and send you a big pounding through the telephone."

Then they had gone to the airport with their parents. Thilini had watched Ganga go away and she cried quietly.'

***

Two hours had gone fast. Today Thilini was standing in the same airport where she had watched her sister leave her four years ago. Thilini had felt so lost, so sad. She had missed all the times they argued, all the times they hit each other, all the times they had fun, all the times they were TOGETHER. Today, she was waiting for Ganga to come back. She was so excited.

"Thili, hi! You are changed. I am back. Finally I can stay with you again. I am glad."

Thilini was overjoyed. After four years they reunited. She hugged Ganga. The first thing she asked was "Did you bring anything for me?" and they went back home, together, once again.
