Heshan, Miniruwani, Gayan and Imara establish records at Schools Swimming C'ships by Leslie Fernando Heshan Unamboowe of Trinity College, Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International School, Gayan Samarakoon of Nalanda College and Imara Fahim of Elizabeth Moir School gave impressive performances to establish new meet records on the penultimate to day of the four-day 33rd Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool yesterday. With yesterday's four records, the tally rose to ten. National swimmer Unamboowe who returned from England a couple of days back, accounted for the first record in the Boys under-15 - 100 metres backstroke 'clocking' 1.05.09 secs to erase off the previous mark held by Ashane Fernando of St. Joseph's College 1.09.09 secs. Miniruwani was responsible for the second record in the girls under-15-100 metres butterflystroke erasing off a 14 year-old record. She timed 1.12.44 secs. Upeksha Silva of CIS held the earlier record of 1.14.24 secs in 1992. The third record went to Gayan in the boys under-15 - 200 metres freestyle 2.11.75 secs. He beat Adrian Jayawardena of Wycherly International School mark of 2.14.02 secs. Imra Fahim of Elizabeth Moir School was the other record breaker in the girls under-17-200 metres freestyle - 2.28.97 secs. She erased off the mark of Apeksha Jayasuriya of Musaeus College - 2.29.32 secs. Unamboowe, in addition to his record, also won the 100 metres freestyle 58.40 secs while Minuruwani also won another event 50 metres butterflystroke - 34.38 secs. Mahamaya College, Kandy swimmers dominated the relays, winning four of them with case. Their swimmers won the 4 X 50 metres girls under-11 medlay relay 2.53.69 secs 4 x 100 metres medlay relay girls under-13 - 5.33.13 secs, girls under-9 4 x 50 metres freestyle relay 2.47.49 secs and the 4 x 50 metres freestyle relay girls under-11-2.29.66 secs. Royal College was in front in the boys overall standings, collecting 191 points followed by Trinity College 178 points. Ananda in third place with 177 points and St. Joseph's College fourth with 173 points. The defending champions and favourites Mahamaya College took a big lead with 326 points. Musaeus College in second position with 144 points Visakha Vidyalaya third with 95 points and St. Bridget's Convent fourth 60 points. Today is final day of the meet the events start at 8.00 a.m. with 36 events to be worked off in the under-15, under-17, under-19 boys and girls backstroke, breaststroke 4 x 100 metres medley and freestyle relays. The meet is sponsored by Milo and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association which a trial to pick swimmers to represent the schools at the Asian Schools Swimming Championships to be held in July in Hong Kong.
