Army and Mahamaya are swim champs

Mahamaya Girls College won the women's championship while Sri Lanka Army won the men's championship at the Short Course Swimming Championship organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) and held at the Hillwood College Swimming Pool in Kandy yesterday.

This two-day swimming championship attracted a good number of participants despite another school's swimming championship being held in Colombo these days.

Mahamaya Girls College emerged easy winners with 314 points and in second place was Hillwood College with 52 points and Girls High School, Kandy finished third with 39 points. Thus the Kandy Girls Schools making a clean sweep of the first three places.

Sri Lanka with 161 points emerged champions in the championship for men and in second place was Sri Lanka Police with 148 points. In fact the soldiers were able to lift the overall men's championship title in the very last event for the day when their 'A' and 'B' teams finished first and second in the 4 x 50 metres medley relay which robbed the Police of the championship title. It was a final spurt in the waters by the soldiers.

The star of the meet was little Madhavee Weeratunga of Mahamaya Girls College who was adjudged the Best Swimmer' in the championship for women. Madhavee Weeratunga won the 200 metres Individual Medley, 100 metres freestyle, 50 metres freestyle and was also placed second in the 200 metres backstroke, 200 metres butterfly and 100 metres breaststroke.

In addition she also helped her school to win the relay events. Madhavi's sister Hansani Weeratunga too excelled by winning the 200 metres freestyle, 100 metres butterfly and was also placed in another event. Thus the Weeratunga girls made a big contribution towards Mahamaya's winning of the championship title.

Kushan de Silva of Rainbow Aquatic Club was adjudged the Best Swimmer among the men. Kushan de Silva's achievements were winning the 100 metres butterflystroke, 100 metres freestyle, 50 metres butterflystorke, 100 metres individual medley and was placed second in the 200 metres individual medley.

A total of 21 clubs and schools participated in this swimming championship.

The distribution of awards took immediately after the completion of the meet and doing the honoure were the Chief Guest Samantha Wickremasinghe and Guests of Honour Mahinda Liyanage, M. Padmasiri Punchihewa, A. Farood, P. S. P. Dayananda and Rodney Silva.
