Six players for Asian Billiards and Snooker C'ships

A Six-member team of Billiards and Snooker players, comprising evergreen Henry Boteju of YMCA Colombo, K. H. Sirisoma of Sri Lanka Ports Authority, S. H. M. Azlam of Moors SC, Ryan Somaratne of Otter AC, Shashika Perera of Break Point Pool Parlour and I. S. H. Irfan of RS Sports Club will leave on May 11 to participate at the Asian Open Billiards Championships and the under 21 Asian Snooker Championships hosted by Iran Billiards and Snooker Federation to be played from May 13 to 22 in Teheran, Iran.

Tissa Samarasinghe, the Secretary, Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka (BSASL) said that these six players were selected on their performances for the year 2005-2006.

Boteju Sirisoma and Azlam will play in the Billiards Championships while Somaratne, Perera and Irfan will play in the under-21 Snooker Championships.

According to Samarasinghe, Mukthar Ameer, the chief referee of BSASL will accompany the cuesits as manager. Ameer is also expected to officiate at the championships and gain more experience prior to the Asian Snooker Championships to be held in Colombo in July this year.

Sixteen leading cuesits were selected to the 'pool' by the Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka to undergo training in preparation for the forthcoming Asian Snooker Championships to be hosted and conducted by BSASL from 30 June to 13 July in Colombo.

Best six players will represent Sri Lanka at this championships along with top players from other Asian countries.

The 16 players are: National Champion Susantha Boteju (YMCA Colombo), National runner-up Naresh Samarawickrema (YMBA Galle), P. Pushpakumara (YMBA Colombo), M. I. Nagaria (Automobile Association Club), Suresh Hassim (Otter AC), Shehan Somaratne (SSC), S. H. M. Azlan (Moors SC), K. H. Sirisoma (Sri Lanka Ports Authority), S. L. Sulfika (YMCA Colombo), M. L. M. Fazal (Moors SC), Anil Rohana (Carlton SC), Abdul Latheef (Moors SC), Nimal de Silva (Grand Oriental Hotel, Nuwara Eliya), K. V. W. Jayasekara (YMCA, Colombo), A. A. Careem (AAC), M. I. M. Ishan (AAC).

The pool practices will begin shortly at the U. W. Sumithipala Billiards and Snooker Parlour at Reid Avenue. In addition to the open events at the Asian Snooker Championships, the under-21 events will also be held. BSASL has already picked two players to represent Sri Lanka. They are; Somaratne brothers Ryan of Otter AC and Shehan of SSC.
