CH hope to give something back to sponsors Hutch

by Ranjan Anandappa

CH & FC, one of the oldest rugby playing clubs, will scrum down with 'Hutch' to thicken their cushions for a successful rugby season this year.

For the first time 'Hutch' (Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.) has come forward to sponsor a rugby playing club. The sponsors were reluctant to disclose the exact amount of the sponsorship package, but gave an indication that it could run into a couple of millions.

The Gymkhana Club is one of the foremost clubs, comprising Colombo Cricket Club, CH & FC and Queens Tennis Club can boast of a rich history. The club has staged many internationally reputed Test cricket matches, rugger, hockey and tennis tournaments. However, during the last eight years or so the club could not sustain the same momentum. The club and Hutch believe that the sponsorship undoubtedly will energise CH & FC rugger.

The club has rendered the services of former national coach Jeff Matheson who was in charge of the national team from 1989 to 91'. Their vision is to be the best rugger team, and win every major title.

The Chairman of the Gymkhana Club Shammi Silva said that the sponsorship was an investment and he hoped to give something back. He assured that Hutch who has come forward for the first in a sponsorship of this nature has not made a mistake in choosing the club.

The CEO of Hutch Thiru Nadarasa said that CH & FC is a club with a prestigious history and pedigree and is pleased to be associated with the club." Like the Hutch network built over the last few years, CH & FC has also invested significantly in building a strong squad. I am confident that CH & FC will deliver to our expectations as Hutch is doing for the people in Sri Lanka." said Nadarasa.

Besides the team sponsorship, Hutch has also made arrangements to provide all the players with Hutch connections. It is a step forward in building sponsor loyalty. If the team wins any major tournaments, ambitious -plans of rewarding cash grants to the team is on the cards.

A press briefing was held at the Gymkhana Club Auditorium in connection to the sponsorship. Sanjaya Senerath (GM Marketing Hutch), Lasantha Perera (Senior GM Operations), Shane Dullewa (Vice Chairman, Gymkhana Club), Rajan Canagasabay (Rugby Convenor CH & FC), and Ashan Welegedera (Secretary Gymkhana Club) were present.
