Susantha Gunawardena who took to motor racing only a few years ago is fast emerging to be one of the top drivers in the Ford Laser Events. He proved his versatility in this event when he won both the Ford Laser / Mazda 323 1300 cc and 1500 cc events quite comfortably at the recently concluded Singer Nuwara Eliya Road Races organised by the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club and the Nuwara Eliya Motor Racing Club.

In both those events, he qualified for 'polo' position by recording the fastest timings at the official practices. He started off 'like a bullet' and kept his front position in all five laps in both 1300 cc and 1500 cc Ford Laser / Mazda 323 events.

The earlier week Susantha Gunawardena won the Ford Laser / Mazda 323 1300 cc event at the Mahagastota Speed Hill Climb and was placed second at the Radella Speed Hill Climb.

Susantha Gunawardena did not limit his interests to the Stock Car events as he has now taken over to formula racing and he drives a Pre-85 Mcfoil Ford 1600 cc Standard Ford Formula car and he has been preforming exceedingly well in the pre - 85 category beating all drivers.

Susantha Gunawardena started his racing career at the Ruhunu Races in the year 2000 at the Koggala Free Trade Zone track in a Ford Laser. He has an inauspicious start in his debut as his vehicle had technical problems.

But thereafter with more exposure and with the help of his sponsors Mcfoil and Mobil and under the guidance of Legendary Bri Ponnambalam success simply came his way. His record in such that since then he has collection of 45 trophies in Ford Laser events alone thus underlying the fact that he is one of the best exponents in this class.

Susantha also has the experience in participating in the Indo-Sri Lanka Formula Races held in Coimbatore in India in February 2006.
