Coalition chopper crashes in Afghanistan with 10 on board KABUL, May 6, 2006 (AFP) A coalition helicopter involved in an anti-Taliban operation has crashed in Afghanistan with 10 people on board, the US military said Saturday, but details on casualties were not available. The crash in eastern Kunar province late Friday was not the result of enemy action, the coalition said in a statement. "The CH-47 was conducting operations on a mountain top landing zone when the crash occurred," the statement said. "Additional aircraft and crews were also at the landing zone and confirmed that enemy forces did not cause the crash." The statement said the Chinook transport chopper had been carrying nine people but a coalition spokeswoman later told AFP it had 10 passengers and crew on board. She could not say who they were. The aircraft was taking part in a massive anti-Taliban drive, Operation Mountain Lion, that was launched in Kunar last month, Lieutenant Tamara Lawrence said. It crashed near the provincial capital Asadabad which is close to the border with Pakistan. "Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing," the statement said. |
